Food as medicine

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Health Forever Products Limited, Otunba Olajuwon Okubena writes on the role of food as ‘medicine’.
Hippocrates lived about 2,500 years ago. The interpretation of his quote is that the ideal food should have, in addition to normal food, nutrients, such as sugar, elements, vitamins and fatty acids.
The quote is a confirmation of what the scriptures had says from beginning of creation. Going through the scriptures, Genesis 1:29 said: “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food”.

In Ezekiel 47:12, the Bible says: “ Fruit trees of all kinds will grow on both banks of the river, their leaves will not wither nor their fruit fail, every month they will bear fruit because the water from the sanctuary flows to them. Their fruit will serve for food and their leaves for healing. Another interesting portion of the Bible is Daniel Chapter 1:5-15, where Daniel in captivity refused to defile himself with portion of the King’s meat, nor the wine which he drank, but preferred to eat vegetables and drink water.

At the end of 10 day’s trial, he looked much better than those who were fed with the King’s meat. The last chapter of the Bible, Revelation Chapter 22:12, also confirms the importance of plant that it is for the healing of the nations.

3 steps to being your own health care advocate

The rules and regulations in health care can often overwhelm even the most seasoned medical professional. One man has decided that a team approach may be the best way to get healthy and protect personal interests.

"Americans do a great job of planning for vacations, for retirement, for saving money for a kids education. But it's a rare person I've met who plans for a serious diagnosis,” said Leslie Michelson, author of “The Patient’s Playbook.”

According to a Healthgrades survey, one out of every six patients in the U.S. receives care at a less-than-stellar hospital. Not getting the best care possible could not only increase your risk of medical errors, it could also increase your risk of death.

“Before we get sick, everyone has a notion that there’s a health care system out there that’s suddenly going to spring into action to support them,” Michelson said. “Unfortunately, that’s not the case.”

Michaelson wrote his book after getting treatment for a rare disease himself, and today he has made it his mission to help others get the best care possible— no matter how much money they have.

The first step is finding a primary care provider who fits your needs. Michelson recommends finding a physician you’re comfortable speaking with and who is comfortable speaking with you.

Reducing asthma medicine can be done safely with guidance

PHOENIX — Stepping down asthma medicines can be done safely and at a lower cost for patients, says a new Mayo Clinic study published recently in The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology.
It is common for patients and doctors to test if taking less daily asthma medicine is safe — primarily because of the high cost of asthma medicine. However, deciding when to reduce daily asthma medicines can be challenging, and it would be helpful to understand the risks involved.

The study, led by Dr. Matthew Rank, an allergy and immunology specialist at Mayo Clinic in Arizona, analyzed asthma outcomes after patients stepped down their daily asthma medicines. The team studied more than 4,000 patients (adults and children) who were taking daily asthma medicines and focused their analysis on two groups: Patients who had stable asthma for at least one year who stayed on their same daily asthma medicine and patients who had stable asthma for at least one year who stepped down their daily asthma medicine.

Stepping down asthma medicines in patients who have had stable asthma for at least one year appears to be as safe as continuing the same level of medicines, the study found. Only 11 percent of patients had problems with their asthma in the four to five months after stepping down their asthma medicines.
"Trying to reduce the daily asthma medicine speaks to the principle of using the least amount of medicine to control symptoms and prevent attacks," Rank said.
